Trinity Church escapes damage in the Great Fire of 1845 that leveled one-third of Pittsburgh.  It hosts meetings for groups displaced by the fire, including becoming the site of classes for Western University of Pennsylvania.

Alonzo Potter and his children

On the seventh ballot, Alonzo Potter was elected as the third bishop of Pennsylvania.  A compromise candidate, Potter was vice-president of Union College when elected.  Lay representatives from 13 western parishes participated in the election.
