Bishop Madison of Virginia

26 May 1812

Bishop White reports to the diocesan convention that he had taken several steps concerning a possible western bishop, but that the death of Bishop Madison of Virginia had put the matter on hold. He requested a conditional vote of approval from convention that would allow western parishes to come under the superintendency of a western bishop should one be appointed.  The convention agreed and that same day created the Society of the Protestant Episcopal Church for the Advancement of Christianity in Pennsylvania.  The society's purpose was to recruit and support missionaries in the state.
