After the Civil War, the diocese had an interest in work among the growing African-American presence in Pittsburgh. St. Paul’s, Laceyville in the Hill District led the way in 1866 by organizing a mission congregation (Epiphany) that met at St. Paul’s.  Bishop Kerfoot reported on his visit to the mission in February 1867.
