Why Does Classical Church Music Sound The Way It Does?

The best answer can only be subjective because it is a personal response not based on a commonly shared understanding. Yet musicians take great delight in making an objective reality out of the subjective.

Come to the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Recital and Compline on Thursday, January 15th at 7:00 p.m. and our Director of Music and Arts, Dr. Douglas Starr, will conjecture why Bach sounds like Bach, what makes English church music English and French music French.

There will be a short Lecture and Organ Demonstration followed by sung Compline Prayer all held in the Church Chancel. Organ works will range from J. S. Bach and Clarambault to Marcel Dupre and Herbert Howells.
