Episcopal Diocese of Pittsburgh

Affiliations & Partnerships

We are diocese in The Episcopal Church, rooted in the truth of Scripture, tradition, and reason. We are a thoughtful, inclusive church, welcoming all who seek to know and walk in the way of Jesus Christ. We are a hopeful church, always looking for signs of God’s redeeming love at work so that we might participate in it.

The Episcopal Church is a multinational denomination, with about 1.5 million members in more than 20 countries and territories. We are united in worship through the liturgies and prayers of the Book of Common Prayer and a three-year cycle of Scripture readings.

The Episcopal Church is the only U.S.-based member of the global Anglican Communion, which is the world’s third-largest group of Christians. We are descended from the Church of England and seek to bring the rich traditions of Anglican theology and practice into conversation with new knowledge, which we understand to be a blessing from the Holy Spirit.

The Anglican Communion is a family of Anglican and Episcopal churches from around the world, each of which traces its roots to the Church of England. The communion comprises more than 80 million members in 42-member churches in more than 165 countries. Though The Episcopal Church is multinational, we are the only U.S.-headquartered member church in the communion.

Our presiding bishop also holds the title of primate of The Episcopal Church within the context of the Anglican Communion. Primates are the senior bishops, archbishops, and moderators from the communion’s member churches. The Archbishop of Canterbury is the most senior bishop in the Church of England and has historically served as the ceremonial leader of the Anglican Communion.

Everything we do as a church is grounded in our connection to this larger communion, which strengthens and challenges us as we seek to follow the risen Christ.
