Diocesan Formation Programs and Initiatives

The Episcopal/Anglican Concentration at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary (PTS) offers specialized plans of study to prepare Master of Divinity and Master of Pastoral Studies students for ordained ministry and/or service within the Episcopal Church within the excellent academic and ecumenical context for which PTS is well known. Students participate in the Episcopal House of Studies which includes communal opportunities for daily Morning and Evening Prayer, weekly formational conversations, monthly luncheon presentations and discussions, and informal mentoring. Required coursework within the degree programs allows for engagement with Episcopal/Anglican spirituality, liturgical praxis in worship, and field placement in an Episcopal congregation or institutional setting as well as targeted electives in Anglican and Episcopal history, theology, ethics, liturgics, and the Book of Common Prayer. For more information, contact the Rev. Canon Dr. Cathy Brall at cbrall@episcopalpgh.org.

The Iona School of Pittsburgh is an educational initiative of the Diocese of Pittsburgh at Trinity Cathedral. The school will form and train individuals who sense a call to holy orders and bi-vocational ministry. Three tracks of study are offered for those pursuing the priesthood, the diaconate, and lay leadership. It will include theological education, liturgical training, and both practical and spiritual theology. Students will have flexible study opportunities alongside once a month community learning at Trinity Cathedral. It is a member of the Iona Collaborative, a consortium of thirty Episcopal dioceses in partnership with the Seminary of the Southwest which provides graduate-level, digitized curriculum, support, and training. The Iona School of Pittsburgh will begin its first cohort in the Fall of 2022. For more information, contact the Rev. Bonnie-Marie Yager-Wiggan at byagerwiggan@trinitycathedralpgh.org.

Love+Teach+Heal Academy (LTH) is a yearlong course that trains lay leaders in theology essentials, liturgics, and biblical interpretation to enable participants to communicate effectively about what they believe and why it matters, in words and in actions. LTH includes members from throughout the diocese who meet weekly from September through May. The Academy equips participants to discern new ministries and find creative ways to serve their home parish and community. LTH Academy builds up the wider Church by further establishing the strengths and leadership gifts of laypeople. The Academy will enter its fourth year in Fall 2021. Participants have gone on to discern priestly orders, establish numerous new local lay ministries, and volunteer at the local parish level. For more information, contact the Rev. Canon Natalie Hall at nhall@episcopalpgh.org.
