Associate Rector for Campus & Youth Ministry

Episcopal Church of the Redeemer – Squirrel Hill, Pittsburgh, PA
Full-Time Clergy Position

The Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, a vibrant parish in the heart of Pittsburgh’s historic Squirrel Hill neighborhood, seeks a creative, energetic, and theologically articulate Associate Rector to lead and grow our ministries with college students, graduate students, and youth. This position offers a unique opportunity to engage four diverse university campuses, foster intergenerational relationships, and nurture the Christian faith of young people while serving on campus and in a dynamic, growing, multi-faith neighborhood.


Primary Ministry Responsibilities

Campus Ministry Leadership (65-75%)
Carnegie Mellon University, University of Pittsburgh, Chatham University, and Carlow University

    • Build a cohesive, relational, and spiritually grounded community that connects Christian students, faculty, and staff across multiple campuses.
    • Develop means of identifying Episcopal students, faculty, and staff; evangelize and invite into faith life and practice.
    • Create regular rhythms of gathering—small groups, meals, prayer, pastoral presence on campuses, and shared formation opportunities.
    • Integrate campus-ministry participants into the worship, community life, and mission of the Episcopal Church, on campuses and parishes, beginning with the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer. Redeemer’s mission statement, With You & For You, reflects our desire to receive the promises of Jesus Christ as they shape our worship and daily life within an intentionally cross-generational community.
    • Empower student leadership and foster peer-to-peer ministry.

Youth Ministry Development (Junior High & High School) (25-35%)

    • Launch and scale a Youth Ministry for mid- and upper-elementary students, creating a clear pathway for progression into an active junior high and high school youth group within 2–5 years.
    • Provide age-appropriate formation, fellowship, service opportunities, retreats, and confirmation preparation.
    • Recruit, equip, and support volunteer mentors and teachers.
    • Cultivate a spiritually rich environment for youth and their families.

Liturgical & Pastoral Responsibilities

Regular Liturgical Leadership

    • Serve regularly as preacher and celebrant at Sunday worship and major feast days and observances.
    • Offer capable, thoughtful leadership at the altar consistent with Episcopal liturgical tradition.
    • Preaching style that is biblically centered and communicates God’s promises in Christ Jesus with theological depth and clarity with pastoral sensitivity.
    • Integrate campus ministry into the liturgical life of Redeemer and other congregations.
    • Preference for candidate who is confident in musical leadership.

Viewpoint Diversity

    • Able to articulate personal faith and associated practice.
    • Relate graciously and respectfully with people across theological, political, cultural, and generational differences.
    • Model open conversation, curiosity, pastoral thoughtfulness, and generous orthodoxy.

Ministry in a Multi-Faith Neighborhood

    • Recognize and respect the religious, cultural, and historical richness of Squirrel Hill, which remains the historic center of Jewish life in Pittsburgh and includes growing pan-Asian and service worker populations.
    • Engage with curiosity and humility in interfaith opportunities as appropriate.
    • Participate in Redeemer’s commitments to hospitality and community partnership.

Qualifications

  • Ordained priest eligible for licensing in the Episcopal Diocese of Pittsburgh.
  • Preference for priest having completed curacy.
  • Demonstrated experience in campus ministry, youth ministry, or young adult formation.
  • Strong interpersonal, pastoral, and communication skills.
  • Commitment to collaborative ministry and shared leadership with clergy, staff, and laity.
  • Ability to thrive in a diverse, intellectually engaged, multi-campus context.
  • Passion for nurturing Christian discipleship among emerging generations.

  • The Associate Rector for Campus & Youth Ministry reports to the Rector in collaboration with the Episcopal Diocese of Pittsburgh’s Campus Strategy Board led by the diocesan Canon to the Ordinary for Mission, Vitality, and Administration.A bachelor’s degree, a master’s degree preferred, from an accredited university/seminary.
