The Reverend Austin A. Hurd, Jr., 94, of Cabot, Pa., and formerly of Oakmont, Pa., passed away peacefully at home on January 27, 2026.
He was the son of the late Hannah Shaffer Hurd and Austin A. Hurd, Sr., of Sewickley, Pa. Beloved husband of 72 years to Mary Nell Johnstone Hurd. Loving father to Carol Pickerine and David (Linda) Hurd. Grandfather of Hannah (Adam) Braithwaite, Sam (Cassie) Pickerine and Charlie Pickerine. Great-grandfather of Claudia Pickerine and Felicity Braithwaite.
Father Hurd served as rector of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Oakmont, PA, from 1972 to 1993. He served as Vicar of St. Francis in the Fields, Somerset, PA, from 1967 to 1972 and served as a Chaplain at UPMC St. Margaret Hospital in Pittsburgh from 1993 to 1995.
He retired in 1995 and soon moved to central Florida, where he enjoyed golf, fishing and occasional boating. Every summer, he and Mary Nell would travel from Florida to Pittsburgh to enjoy family and friends. After many years, they moved back to the Pittsburgh area and made a home at Concordia Lutheran Ministries in Cabot, Pa.
A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, February 21, 2026, at 1 p.m., at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 378 Delaware Avenue, Oakmont, PA 15139.
O God, whose mercies cannot be numbered: Accept our prayers on behalf of thy servant Austin and grant him an entrance into the land of light and joy, in the fellowship of thy saints; through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
