New Mission Statement and Goals Adopted

Our mission is to be:

This new mission statement was adopted by the three senior diocesan leadership groups on September 26, along with new statements that express our vision of who we see ourselves to be and the value we place in our faith, heritage, relationships, and mission.

The statements can be viewed by clicking here.

Members of the Standing Committee, Diocesan Council and Trustees have been meeting together since mid-May to draft these documents. On the very first day, it became apparent to Bishop Johnson that the discussion should be shared and set the tone for this year’s Diocesan Convention.

The project was completed in time for presentations at the pre-convention information session, scheduled for October 4, and at Convention itself, October 16 and 17.

“I thought this was an important process to go through, as we rediscover who we are and what we need to do to rebuild the Diocese of Pittsburgh,” said Bishop Johnson, whose joint Leadership Days have become a hallmark of his time as Assisting Bishop.

Also on September 26, the leadership groups finalized the diocesan Goals and Objectives for 2009-2010.

Five major goals focus on diocesan leadership, internal relationships, parish health, financial stability, and communication and branding. Each contains a number of specific objectives.

To involve as many people as possible in implementing the goals, diocesan leaders are planning several ways of recruiting volunteers.

Convention Deputies will have an opportunity to learn more through mailings and meetings. At Convention, a display is planned to showcase this work and offer opportunities for persons to volunteer to be part of our “Human Capital” database, which is designed to help fill committee and volunteer positions as they open across the diocese.

The goals and volunteer forms will also be distributed to parishes in the near future.

Reported by Dana Phillips, a member of St. Thomas Memorial Church, Oakmont, and a Trustee of the Episcopal Diocese of Pittsburgh. Dana facilitated the Leadership Day sessions that produced the new mission statements and goals.
