Gleaning Opportunities

Get some fresh air, camaraderie and exercise! When a generous farmer in the area anticipates a crop surplus the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank is contacted, volunteers are organized to pick the remaining crop. Gleaning sessions are typically two to three hours and the GPCFB's Produce Specialist brings any necessary equipment. The produce goes back to the Food Bank for distribution through either local food pantries or Produce to People sessions.

To participate, sign up for notifications by sending an email to volops@gpcfb.org. Glean notices go out about a week before the gleaning session. Reply to volunteer for the glean you want to work.

Film Series

Three movies are scheduled with hunger-related themes: Sept. 23, Oct. 14, and Nov. 19, Friday evenings at 7:30 p.m.. This is a chance to learn about food production and some of the issues that are raised.

Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank

Saturdays, Oct. 8 and 22, 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Once again participants from churches throughout the diocese will go to the main warehouse facility (1 North Linden St., Duquesne, PA 15110). On previous work days we have repacked a couple tons of cereal; what we repack depends on the inventory at the time. Volunteers must be 12 years of age or older and be able to stand for two or more consecutive hours. To volunteer for this activity contact Jerry Stephenson (jjmestephenson@verizon.net or 412-367-1032) by October 3 for the October 8th workday and by October 17 for the October 22nd workday.

CROP Hunger Walks

Church World Service sponsors CROP Hunger Walks in southwest Pennsylvania Sunday afternoons in October. Proceeds from the walks support the hunger-fighting work of Church World Services around the world while 25% of the funds support local ministries. Go to www.churchworldservice.org to find the one in your area.
