Calvary Celebrates Feast of Sam Shoemaker

On Sunday, January 31st, the day that the church has set aside to commemorate our 12th Rector, Samuel Moor Shoemaker, will be observed with special events at Calvary Episcopal Church.

Our guest preacher at the 9 am and 11 am Eucharists will be Dr. Karen A. Plavan, a professor at Penn State University, adjunct professor at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary and vice-chair of the Oasis Recovery Center Board of Directors. Oasis is a new organization that helps individuals and families recover from all addictions.

Dr. Plavan, who holds a Ph.D. in Counselor Education from the University of Pittsburgh, was instrumental in the publication of a book entitled, New Light on Alcoholism: God, Sam Shoemaker, and A.A. She also helped secure the Shoemaker book collection for Calvary Church (housed in the Shoemaker Room) which contains every book published by Dr. Shoemaker. She has been a member of the National Cathedral Association of SW Pennsylvania, and has served as president of the United Nations Association in Pittsburgh.

At the 10 o'clock adult forum on that day, parishioners who know Dr. Shoemaker personally will share reminiscences about his ministry and the effect that he had on their lives.

Please plan to be present to celebrate the life and ministry of one of Calvary's most distinguished rectors.
