This year, as parishes select new or continuing deputies to the diocesan convention, those individuals will have the added responsibility of electing the next Bishop of Pittsburgh.

Diocesan Canon II.2 states that lay deputies shall be elected by the vestry or at a parish meeting and serve staggered three-year terms beginning "the first day of July preceding the Annual Convention for which they were first certified."

So, the same deputies chosen for the 2011 annual convention scheduled for November 4th and 5th will also be in office when the special electing convention convenes five months later on April 21, 2012.

Parishes must elect and certify the names of all their lay deputies by June 30.
