The Standing Committee of the Episcopal Diocese of Pittsburgh announces its selection of 27 individuals who will serve on the two committees that will guide the search, election, and installation of the next Bishop of Pittsburgh.
A 15-member Nomination Committee was chosen from a wide cross-section of the diocese. Its charge is to develop a diocesan profile and to prepare a slate of candidates, both those it selects as well as those placed in nomination by petition. No parish is represented more than once on the committee.
The Nomination Committee will be chaired by Dana Phillips, a member of St. Thomas Memorial Church in Oakmont and a Trustee of the diocese. In 2009, Dana facilitated the leadership discussions that resulted in a new diocesan mission statement and strategic plan.
Starting in mid-January, Dana plans to contact every congregation of the diocese to set up time to listen to their hopes and concerns about the bishop search.
The 11 members of the Transition Committee were chosen for their demonstrated skill in handling the logistical detail and hospitality required during the search, election and episcopal transition that lies ahead.
The Standing Committee appointed its out-going president, the Rev. Nancy Chalfant-Walker, to chair the Transition Committee. She is the rector of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Wilkinsburg.
Additionally, the Rev. Don Youse will serve as chaplain to the Nomination and Transition Committees. His responsibility will be to help committee members keep their focus on the spiritual nature of the search process during meetings, public events, and in private conversations.
Eighteen of the diocese's 29 parishes are represented in these appointments.
The Standing Committee also named the Rev. Conrad Selnick of the Diocese of Ohio as the search consultant. He brings 20 years experience as a consultant, including extensive experience in guiding dioceses through the bishop search process.
The committees will begin their work with a joint retreat on Saturday, January 15th.
The 8th Bishop of Pittsburgh will be elected at a Special Convention to be held on April 21, 2012. The installation of the new bishop is tentatively set for the weekend of October 19, 2012, pending consent from General Convention.
