The Pittsburgh diocese made no distinction between black and white clergy.  William Wilson was present in 1881 and voted as the diocese elected the Rev. Courtland Whitehead as bishop to replace the deceased Bishop Kerfoot. St. Cyprian's was growing but did not yet meet the criteria to be admitted to the diocese, so Wilson was the only black with a vote at the convention.
