In 1996 when the Rev. Dr. Harold Lewis arrived as rector of Calvary Episcopal Church, it marked the first time in the diocese that a black clergy person had been called to lead a parish with a majority of white members. Calvary was among the largest and wealthiest parishes in the diocese.  Lewis had served on the staff of Episcopal Church Center.  The Post Gazette carried the story.
